Biography
"색면 추상회화처럼 보이는 에단 쿡(Ethan Cook, b. 1983)의 캔버스 작업은 회화의 기본적인 요소인 물감이 사용되지 않았다는 점에서 관람자의 예상을 뒤엎는다. 에단 쿡은 물감과 붓 대신 색실과 베틀을 사용하여 색색의 직물을 짜서 배열하고, 이를 바느질로 이어 프레임에 끼운다. 베틀을 이용한 직조 과정은 오랜 시간의 수작업을 필요로 한다. 얼핏 보기에 매끈한 평면 같은 그의 작품에서는 수작업의 흔적들, 예를 들어 직물 표면에 올이 나가 있거나 실이 당겨지거나 엉킨 부분들이 나타나기도 한다. 흥미롭게도 작가는 리처드 프린스(Richard Prince), 셰리 레빈(Sherrie Levine) 등의 전유예술(appropriation art) 작가들과 자신을 동일시한다. 이들은 기존 예술 작품의 소재나 실제 사물 등을 차용해 복제 또는 콜라주(collage)하여 원본을 비틀었다. 그는 면 제조업체가 공급하는 색의 범주 안에서 작품을 구상하고, 베틀 너비에 맞춰 작품의 크기를 결정한다. 이에 더해 작가로서의 주체를 숨긴 채, 기존 회화에서 바탕 재료가 되는 캔버스 자체나 색면추상회화를 복제하는 것에 초점을 맞춘다. 이로써 작가는 자신이 아닌 캔버스 자체로 감상자의 관심을 유도하며, 감상자는 직조된 캔버스에 나타난 수공의 흔적과 다채로운 색면의 조화를 위주로 감상하게 된다. 에단 쿡은 장기간의 수작업으로 캔버스를 작품의 보조수단이 아닌, 작품 자체로 탄생시킴으로써 현대 미술의 화두인 ‘복제와 전유’의 개념이 어떻게 작업에 적용되고 있는지를 제시한다.
