What Makes Life and Art? My work explores the juxtaposition of the urban and the natural through painting. As an artist I take a philosophical approach. I'm inspired by the existential & ethereal qualities in life. It's apparent during my observations in the natural world as I'm absorbed by the visible patterns from light, shadow and texture. I'm a painter, printmaker, photographer & mixed media artist. Intermixing mediums allows for a creative interplay of the known and unknown, which then opens up a new dialogue challenging my creativity. As a painter, I begin by tracing shadows of trees on large canvas. The ritual of dance between the shadow and myself occur while drawing. When photographing I’m reflecting on a moment in time while paying attention to the distinct characteristics of patterns within the projected shadow. Through the eye of the camera I'm much more focused on a composition. Drawing & painting becomes more active and a physical dance between the image and myself. I'm compelled to portray the integrity of my response and what inspires me with all the mediums I use. At times, I'm compelled to juxtapose patterns that I see in everyday life which are observed in landscape, interior spaces and fashion. You will see this evident in my wallpaper prints. I've printed my photographs taken from landscape on commercial wallpaper. I also collage wallpaper and fabric on paintings and create stencils from these decorative materials. I'm interested in the interplay of the patterns created from landscape and those created in the commercial world. My inspiration is to emerge these worlds together in a cohesive interpretation of my own personal journey.
