마이애미 출신의 쿠바계 미국인 화가 헤르난 바스(b.1978)는 19세기 유럽을 중심으로 널리 퍼진 댄디즘(Dandyism)과 데카당스(Decadence), 낭만주의(Romanticism) 등의 문예 레퍼런스에서 영감을 받아 작업해왔다. 풍부한 색채와 섬세한 필치로 가득 찬 그의 회화는 현대인의 두려움과 불안한 심경을 사춘기 소년의 모험, 초자연적인 서사, 신화, 종교적 이야기, 고전 시의 스토리텔링을 빌어 엮어낸다. 헤르난 바스는 세계적인 컬렉터 루벨 부부에게 일찍이 재능을 인정받아 뉴욕 브루클린미술관, 독일 하노버 쿤스트페어라인, 스페인 말라가 현대 미술관 등 전 세계 굴지의 미술 기관에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 베니스 비엔날레(2009)와 휘트니 비엔날레(2004)를 포함한 다수의 단체전에 참여했다. 그의 작품은 뉴욕 휘트니미술관, 샌프란시스코 현대 미술관, 로스엔젤레스 현대 미술관, 온타리오 미술관 등에 영구 소장되어 있다.
